Two years after the deaths of Banita Jacks' four children, the District needs to do more to protect its most vulnerable residents, Judith Sandalow tells listeners on WAMU 88.5 FM. In her commentary, which aired on January 4, 2009, Sandalow suggests that the biggest risk to the 45,000 poor children in DC who rely on government support for their food, shelter and medicine would be to cut these very services.
To put these children first in the District's budget, Sandalow acknowledges that this means raising revenue and making tough budget cuts in other parts of the government. She calls on DC residents to tell their elected officials that they will gain, not lose, votes in November if they raise revenue, even some taxes, to help keep these services intact.
