I’m saddened by the news that former Councilmember Jim Graham, a tireless advocate for children and families in the District of Columbia, has passed away.
During his four terms on the DC Council Graham was steadfast in his support of the District’s most vulnerable residents, including those living in poverty, members of the LGBTQ community and those living with HIV/AIDs. When the Department of Human Services programs were threatened during the financial recession, Graham advocated for tax increases to protect Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and other social services during times of heightened uncertainty. More recently, Graham fought alongside Children’s Law Center to ensure children were not cut off from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and would not lose the critical safety net.
His contributions to the District will not be forgotten, and my thoughts are with our entire community at this time.
