The Sunday Washington Post published CLC Executive Director Judith Sandalow’s Letter to the Editor under the headline Solutions for addressing child abuse. Judith’s letter responded to a long article exploring doctors’ hesitancy to report suspected abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services (CPS). Doctors do not trust CPS to respond effectively – and Judith’s letter explains why, unfortunately, doctors are right. CPS involvement can lead to traumatizing and unnecessary removals and, for children left at home, it does not improve long-run outcomes. Judith’s letter calls on Mayor Gray and the District government to endorse reforms to “rebuild trust in our child welfare system.”

I will never forget my clients … in fact, I still have their picture on the wall in my office, because it really helps me to put into perspective my work and the work of the Children’s Law Center.
