Children’s Law Center fights so every District child can grow up with a loving family, good health and a quality education. Judges, pediatricians and families turn to us to advocate for children who are abused or neglected, who aren’t learning in school, or who have health problems that can’t be solved by medicine alone. The communications intern will report to the Senior External Relations Manager. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Media Relations/Public Relations
- Assisting communications team in preparation of resources and background materials including research as necessary and drafting press-related correspondence (i.e. bios, fact sheets, calendars, media alerts, pitch letters, briefing documents, internal memos, key message points, etc.)
- Compiling and maintaining comprehensive media lists to leverage in strategic outreach
- Participating in brainstorming to develop creative angles to leverage in media outreach and PR campaigns
- Providing thorough debriefing of PR activities; writing and gathering recap documents for documentation purposes and for providing recommendations for future endeavors
- Assisting in developing social media content for Children’s Law Center channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
- Conducting social media influencer research
- Helping maintain and updating website
- Assisting in preparing email newsletter outreach
- Organizing and archiving digital images and videos
Monitoring and reporting on online activities of relevant organizations
Completing other research projects as assigned
Using Google Analytics to assess trends and activity on Children’s Law Center’s website
Reporting on the performance of social media platforms for communications team
- Attending relevant events, coalition meetings, and Council hearings/roundtables
Requirements and Qualifications
This position unpaid and available as course credit. Applicants must be a current student studying in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or Public Relations. Hours are flexible, but this for-credit position will require a minimum of 10 hours a week and a minimum of 65 total hours per semester. At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external management
Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
Desktop personal computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
Ability to work independently as well as within a small team
Knowledge of and experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
