Achieve Educational Success

Did you know?

  • DC has the 4th lowest graduation rate in the country - only 58% of students graduate from high school.
  • Federal law requires the school system to provide homeless children and children in foster care with transportation to attend their home school.
  • DC Public schools estimate that 20% of their students receive special education services.

How Does CLC Help Children Achieve Educational Success?

Children’s Law Center’s education experts work to secure the services necessary to improve educational outcomes for children involved in DC’s child welfare system as well as children whose disability or developmental delays have an adverse effect on their education and health. CLC attorneys secure special education services and early intervention services, respond to school discipline matters, and maintain children’s school stability and school enrollment.

The evidence is clear – a meaningful education is essential for children to grow and flourish. Whether a child is referred by a Children’s National Medical Center pediatrician or comes to CLC as a foster child, CLC’s education advocacy helps more than 1,000 of DC’s children each year get a good start and keep their feet on a secure path.

Steptoe & Johnson has had a very close relationship with the Children's Law Center since its formation. The cases CLC refers are truly compelling, and the many attorneys who have worked on them over the years have been deeply touched by the experience. It is also a pleasure to work with the CLC staff, all of whom are extremely knowledgeable, and always ready to mentor pro bono attorneys.
