Organize Holiday Toy Drive

Did you know?

  • More than 2,300 children will spend the holidays in group homes or foster care this year.
  • One 10-year old severely neglected boy told his foster mother, “I thought Santa didn’t bring me Christmas presents because I was naughty.”
  • 53% of children in DC live in low-income families.

Why do we organize the Holiday Toy Drive?

Many of Children’s Law Center clients have been neglected, abused and abandoned. Others come from families to poor to buy presents. Some have never had a "real Christmas." Our volunteer Santa's help DC's neediest children and families have a happy holiday season by giving generously of their time and money.

Every November, volunteers:

  • Make wishes come true by buying two gifts from each child's wish list
  • Shop for one full outfit of clothes (including shoes) for a child or group of children
  • Provide a holiday meal by purchasing grocery gift cards
  • Support Children's Law Center with a generous gift and help us, together, meet the needs of children all year 'round
  • Deliver or wrap gifts to Children’s Law Center’s office in early December

Email Alison King to learn how to "adopt" a child for Christmas.

Read about our successful 2009 Holiday Toy Drive, in which our volunteer Santa's donated approximately 3,500 gifts valued at $155,000, beating last year's donation value by 5 percent.

“The advice I would give … is to keep sending Covington and Burling loaned associates to Children’s Law Center. That experience fundamentally changed what it meant to me to be a lawyer. And I can’t overstate how important that experience was to my professional development.”
