Community Recognition

Since Children’s Law Center began in 1996, our work has been recognized nationally and locally. Please take a look at the many awards and honors we have received.
 

Mayor’s Community Service Award, 2009
During 2009 National Volunteer Week, Mayor Adrian Fenty recognized Children's Law Center for making the nation’s capital a safer place for children through its extensive network of pro bono attorneys. Children's Law Center pro bono partner Covington and Burling LLP was also honored by the mayor for its pro bono partnership with Children's Law Center.
 

Positive Nature, Inc. Outstanding Service Award, 2009
Positive Nature, Inc. awarded Children's Law Center's Executive Director, Judith Sandalow, with the 2009 Outstanding Service Award at the Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day Conference “in appreciation of her tireless efforts, exemplary leadership, and amazing dedication in service to the District’s more vulnerable children.”
 

Washington Women in Public Relations, 2009
Children’s Law Center was chosen as the Washington Women in Public Relations 2009-2011 pro bono client.


 
Exponent Award 2007
The Meyer Foundation presented Children’s Law Center's Executive Director, Judith Sandalow, with the 2007 Exponent Award. Each year, the foundation recognizes five non-profit leaders for their dedication and ability to create lasting change in the community. The foundation commends Judith for “her deep professional commitment” as well as her strength and effectiveness as a leader at Children's Law Center and in the community.   
 

Jerrold Scoutt Prize 2007
DC Bar presented Children's Law Center's Special Counsel, Diane Weinroth with the 2007 Jerrold Scoutt Prize. The prize is awarded to attorneys employed by organizations that provides direct, hands-on legal services to poor or disadvantaged persons in the Washington area.  Diane was recognized for demonstrating a high degree of compassionate concern for her clients while exhibiting a high degree of skill on their behalf.

The Frederick B. Abramson Public Interest Fellowship Award
This award recognizes graduating law students, judicial law clerks or practicing attorneys wishing to work in public interest law. Each fellow must demonstrate a commitment to community advancement and public interest by working at a not-for-profit organization in the District of Columbia.

Outstanding Public Advocate Award, 2004
Supervising Attorney Vivek Sankaran received the Outstanding Public Advocate Award from the Asian Pacific Lawyers Association in 2004.
 
DC Department of Mental Health Award, 2004
Executive Director Judith Sandalow received a commendation from the DC Department of Mental Health for her dedication and commitment to DC children.
 

Fellowship Awarded, 2004
Staff Attorney Pooja Mehta (then a law clerk) received a fellowship from the South Asian Bar Association Foundation for her work at Children's Law Center.
 

Leadership Washington Community Partnership Award, 2003
The Leadership Washington Community Partnership Award is presented annually to a non-profit organization and a business (for profit) entity for their successful collaboration efforts on a community project of significant impact.  Children's Law Center and DLA Piper won this award for their strong pro bono partnership which resulted in foster parents of 75 children receiving legal assistance to adopt their children.   
 
DC Bar Certificate of Appreciation, 2003
The DC Bar Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Children’s Law Center for its efforts in supporting Probono.net/dc and hosting the Family Law section of the site.
 
American Bar Association’s Legal Assistance Distinguished Service Award, 2002
Children’s Law Center received the ABA’s Distinguished Service Award for its work with the September 11th Pro Bono Relief Project. 
 
National Association of Counsel for Children’s Legal Advocacy Award, 1998
Children’s Law Center was named the NACC’s 1998 Outstanding Legal Advocate on behalf of its “significant contributions to enhancing the well being of children through legal representation and other advocacy efforts.”
