The Difference 20 Years Makes

Children’s Law Center was founded in 1996 by three dedicated family lawyers – James Marsh, Diane Weinroth and Ken Noyes – who believed every DC child deserved a loving, stable family.

It was a bleak time. Almost 8,000 children languished in the child welfare system. Thousands sat in classrooms without learning. Families whose children had mental health needs often had to go it alone.

We've come a long way since then.

Children's Law Center has helped almost 30,000 children and families since 1996 – and we now reach 1 out of every 9 children in neighborhoods where we’re needed the most. We expanded our early focus on foster care to take a broader approach, including fighting for children’s educational and health needs. Our policy advocacy pushed for reforms to benefit all DC children. And about 2,000 pro bono attorneys from nearly 200 firms have been our partners along the way.

I invite you to read our 20th Anniversary Report in full or get highlights below to learn how Children's Law Center will continue to innovate to meet the changing needs of children in DC. It's because of you – our donors, pro bono lawyers and partners – that our work has been possible.

Thank you,

Our Journey Since 1996
