Oversight Testimony: DOEE

February 22, 2021

At Children's Law Center, we know that poor housing conditions can pose a serious risk to a child's health. Every year we represent hundreds of families in trying to get their landlords to repair housing code violations, including lead-based paint hazards, that threaten the health of the children living in the home. Lead exposure from paint dust or peeling paint can permanently disrupt a child’s growth and learning, and no amount of lead is safe for a child.

That's why Children's Law Center Special Counsel Buck Logan testified today before the DC Council on the DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). Buck praised DOEE for establishing its Lead Reduction Program to provide eligible DC families with funding to remove lead-based paint hazards in their homes. Still, much work needs to be done to fully address lead dangers District children face, and Buck urged the Council to advance previously proposed legislation that would require more proactive inspections for lead paint hazards in DC housing.
